Karate has evolved into a fun and competitive sport which now is played at an Olympic standard.
This is only one aspect of Karate-Do but many practitioners find Sport Karate the most fascinating.
There are many different types of Karate competitions. Our sport Karate training focuses on two rule sets:
. National All Styles (NAS) rules
. World Karate Federation (WKF) Rules
Sport Karate is encouraged at Kiyoshin Karate Association Schools but not compulsory. Though every student will learn Sport Karate Fundamentals as part of their training.
Kata/Forms- Competitors take turns at performing a Kata or Form of choice. They are judged using a score system similar to Diving.
Point Sparring - Competitors face off in Kumite bouts in a round of eliminations. Points a scored in a similar way to how fencing is scored. Point sparring also takes the focus off damaging an opponent to win. Competitors win with quick decisions and good execution of techniques.
Continuous Sparring - Similar to Point Sparring but the Judges don’t stop a bout every time a point is scored.
Demonstrations - Similar to Kata and Forms; a martial art Demonstration is performed to be given a score. Demonstrations can range from Free form performances, Weapon performances and Team fight scenes.
Team Events - Team Kata has 3 members of a team perform a Kata at the same time and the focus is on the team being synchronised. Similar to Synchronised swimming. Higher levels of Team Kata also require a demonstration to be performed that is related to the Kata. Sparring teams consist of 5. This adds a strategic variable to the Competition
